I have some friends that did some tunnel looking on Iwo and Marcus. The authorities frown on it as there is still munitions sitting around here and there. Would be helpful to take one of the locals with ya.

that's how the tunnels in Okinawa were, they were actual tours put on by guides from the Marine Corps that knew exactly where to step and what no to touch, problem was we were gone before we got the chance to take the tour.  we were supposed to go to Iwo also, that's sacred ground for us Marines.....maybe someday I'll get the chance again

Toleary. Off the subject but ..... My ole buddy, actually next door neighbor, and much older than I, passed away last month. A Marine, he fought at the battle of Iwo. I gave him a commemorative Iwo Jima US Marines knife a few years ago and he got a little choked up.

that was very noble of you, being a combat veteran myself, i know how hard it is to remember the past.  there is no battlefield that doesn't carry scars, there was a quote that said something to the effect of "it takes twenty years to make a soldier, and a matter of seconds in combat to destroy him."  i can attest to this.  that level of appreciation and recognition that you showed him by giving him that precious knife, is beyond any words that can be expressed, and it almost makes me choke up, thank you for recognizing his sacrifice and honoring my fellow brother like that....Semper Fidelis brother

Thanks for the article.  That's amazing.  What a blessing Hitler was defeated.  And bless every soul that participated in the process.  (Even Napoleon had a better end.)   Thanks again.  Debra
