Rider  i always thought civil war hunting was outta my area BUT i recently found out that the state hospital here in Athens , Ohio  was a civil war hospital.  the hospital was built in the early 1800 s   ... just goes to show you that you never know where research will take you.

Hi bob,
You would be surprised at where you will find civil war items, except for the cavalry
the majority of civil war units marched to thier destination, The one cavalry unit that comes to mind was the 24th NY Cav. that was mustered out of Oswego NY. they marched to Albany NY where they were to be issuded horses by the Quartermaster. However upon thier
arrival at Albany there were no horses to be issuded. So they marched South and they did finally recieved horses after ( I beleave it was 2 years of Traveling on foot.)
You can find what routes units traveled by doing some research and if you follow the same routes ( where is possible and not developed) I am sure you will find some nice items.
Ohio like many other states sent many units to fight in the civil war.I would check with historcial society in athens to see what you can find about units in your area. Many units had a converson point in columbus where there was a major encampment. However
due to development that area is gone but I would check the route they traveled if at all possible. I hope this helps you somewhat. If I can help you further dont hesitate to ask
Best Wishes and Happy Hunting....Rob

Rider  great info...thanks!  recently found a book about Athens , Ohio , my hometown,  that has detailed info and township mapes with incredible detail.  150+ schools from 1704  thru 1950 s churches, old cemetaries, it even shows whiskey stills.  general stores, old forts.... this author must have had a lot  of time on his hands.  it also shows how many men went to the civil war from Athens county.  it also has the detailed maps of the underground railroad  locations for each town in the county.  so much info ...  so little time !
