I am currently working to get permission to search an area not far from my home that was once a Confederate Naval Works during the Civil War. Any suggestions/tips/advice as far as gaining permission, the actual search itself, and procedures if any artifacts are indeed found? Thanks in advance!

I have one tip for you. If you find any spikes that look like miniature railroad spikes, square and with a full head, they are not something you should throw away. They are shipwright spikes and even those from the turn of the 20th century, which may actually be galvanized, are worth a few dollars to collectors. You'll find hundreds of bent samples of them. When they bent, they were chucked over the shoulder.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hunt in the all metal mode.   Dig everything, even if the site was also once used by the local fire department for a picnic area.   Buried in among those pull tabs and tinfoil something very good might be located.   Work slow and cover all the area.  Be prepared to spend a lot of time on this one site.   This is not a one or two day hunt.   It may take you several years to properly cover the ground.  Also figure that any metal you uncover was associated with ships and boat building in some fashion or another unless its obviously modern, so be very careful what you toss away.

Okay Coon, thanks for the advice!

UPDATE: Well I have the ball rolling. Have had several emails between about 6 individuals with the local historical society, as well as some city officials. Looks like the land may currently be owned by a small oil company. If any of you saw the John Wayne movie Hell Fighters, I will not be far from the site where that was filmed. So once we find out the property owner, I will submit a request to them.

Does anyone have a generic request form for this kind of detecting? Thanks for all replies and advice!

You don't want a generic request even the big boy's like a personal touch. Also snail mail works better for things like this email is very impersonal.

Mark....get out there and find some stuff buddy, what an opportunity!!! i went to the only Civil War Naval museum in the United States in Columbus, Georgia and have to tell you that it was something else...absolutely incredible to see.  it may also be a good resource for you to research some of the things that you find to try and figure out if it is what they are.  here's the link to the museum, and if you haven't seen it already...i strongly suggest going

Well, I am already running into a snag. I went this morning and talked to the small oil company that supposedly owns the land where the site was. Needless to say, they are not people friendly. Apparently they had a bad experience when they let some local fishermen come onto their property to have access to the bay. So now they don't allow anyone access back there. But, they may not be the owners of that particular spot, I am still researching that one. Looks like they may have the only access road to the area though. So if it turns out they don't own that land, but they do own the road, it will have to be accessed via water. Anyway, the saga continues, will keep you up to date when I know more!
