They used to put coins on key rings to saparate keys to different cars/things and to just make it easy to retrieve from pocket and purse

Yes, I believe that most coins of that era were made scarce by folks losing faith in the US government during the civil war.They hoarded all the silver fhey could find. That is the period when tokens, encased postage stamps, and even fractional currency(small paper nickels, dimes, quarters) were circulated.
  Very nice find! Sure beats my oldest find!

Sometimes people would sew their coins to their clothes so they wouldn't be lost.  I know it sounds odd but it is true.
