I have found some newer coins in a fresh water lake near my home. Most of them have deteriorated so badly it is hard to tell what they are but obviously are newer coins. Should I not waste my time searching this area and spend more time at older homesteads instead ?

depends upon whether you think they will clean up well enough that you can put them back in circulation using CoinStar or the bank......obviously, they don't have any collector value.....but if we're talking quarters that are still recognizable as quarters.
