this is not a real 1804 silver dollar, 1804 is one of the most publized coins in history for rarities. there are 8 originals known and restrike second reverse 7 are known with plain edge. the last one that sold went for $4,140.000 first reverse and 1,207,000 for second reverse. so if you have this coin in your possession. you would never work again and call an auction house immediately!

Bingo! Give this man a Kewpie Doll! I really do have both coins in my possession, right now, within 10 inches of my fingers as I type this.

Both coins are extreme rarities which led me to research them both. I my original post, I said, "This find was a test for me as it should be for you. Enjoy."

When I found them, I looked them up and nearly wet myself with excitement. Doing further research, I discovered that there were numerous fakes of both coins that were issued which had a value unto themselves - which these do. They really are composed of silver and each have a value of about $60.00 which puts them into the category of collectible fakes.

And that was the test. Congratulations. You passed. I'm sad to say there's nothing to be won from this except that your research skills have been honed ever so slightly by the experience.

Rider yippeee, i rather have won a garrett pointer.... Unfortunately China has no law that bans the common person from making counterfiet silver and gold coins of other countries. it has been a real problem in the coin market unfortunately. Here is what some silver dollars look like that i own, I will buy one if i find one below market cost. usually there around $5k depending on condition. I got this one for around 2k from a guy in Utah, i thought it was a steal, and there real!

If we were really clever, brave and bold, we'd find the shipwreck where the rest of the 1804 dollars went down. Or is that a fabricated story? Were the only known examples of the 1804 really struck in 1858? The stories run on and on and nobody knows which are true and which are not.

All I know is that mine are very good fakes and I really did find them in a jar under the sink in an old service station's men's room. Sometimes I pretend they're real and just look at them.

I loved the story!!! Just makes you wonder who put them there and why, and why did they not come back for them.

GoldDigger,
Nice one Smiley still a fun find I'm sure. As for the real ones....

After some digging into the newspaper archives it appears Edmund Roberts the ambassador appointed by Jackson became ill after the Siam stop while aboard the Peacock. Reportedly he died in Macao, his body is buried in Largo De Camoes, near the old Protestant Church built by the East India company in 1814. No word of any shipwreck, or mention of dispersal that I could find.

I'm guessing someone checked his pockets so who knows where they might be? Then again maybe not, are they perhaps with him still, one of the richest dead men on earth?

Idaho Jones, indeed it was a fun find. It wasn't my first cache but every one seems like it for a second or two.

JJ, can I adopt you, mate?

SharenH, my kid brother's house, built 35 years ago, now stands on that very property. We were both quite excited when I found them, got even more excited when I called a coin dealer. Then the bubble burst when we realized they were fakes. Such is life but this is a great campfire story as long as you have the coins in your hand to pass around.

yeah they might be real silver, but definately all CHINA FAKES, geez 5 second look told me they were fake even without my optics. But if your interested in seeing one thats value is over $20,000. here is one out of my collection that has been in a few coins magazines for its natural tone. I bought this about 12 years back.  Rider one of my favorites. Pictures cannot even do this coin justice.

China fakes ?? the nerve .... hehehehe those are my handy work. I made them myself... wow I really thought my work was better than china crap...hmmmfffff...  But he is right. It's very easy to tell the difference between a casting (like mine) and a stamping like a real coin. how ever I would think soon the market will be flooded with "real" stamped silver. Most any good cnc machine can reproduce the dies. I little fine tuning and the line between real and fake gets very blurry.

So if you want to fake something just make a copy and post it online. You can have it analyzed by a thousand experts and every flaw pointed out. Then make version 2....   Grin
