Hi. I found what seems to be an altered 1976 cent with a weird symbol next to Lincoln's face. I can't figure out what it is and can't find its meaning online either. I learned that there are a number of altered pennies out there, and they don't have numismatic value for they were altered after they left the mint. Have anyone seen a penny like this one or know the meaning of its symbol?

It's a Star of David also known as a Jewish star. The symbol inside it is the Hebrew word Chai, which means life.

frazdad speaks the truth (we've researched the hebrew letter here a few times).

Thanks. I had the idea that it was the Star of David, but was not sure because of the symbol inside. It was probably a penny sold as a souvenir, unless it was altered for a different reason. Either way, it is a keeper for I don't think many of these were altered like that. Chai=Life, that is a very nice wish for anyone. I feel fortunate to have come across with it!  Smiley

Might be one of those people who mark every coin or piece of paper money they ever get with their own special mark , in hopes of some day one of them being returned to them. Crazy I know , but people do it.

Stange stuff must have been going on in 1976!

I found this one in a role of dimes.

I found one the other day with a big 19 stamped over Lincoln's face. I have also ran across a lot of star notes on $1 bills. I guess they had to replace a bunch of bills throughout the years....Warren

You do realize that someone created a slug that earned him 9c on a vending machine sale. Pre-zinc center pennies are sanded down to the size of a dime to defraud banks or vending machines of 9c each time. Looks like you are around 9c poorer and if the bank thinks you did that grinding down, you might be doing a frog march down your driveway one day.
