To all experienced Metal Detectors in Utah.  I'm new to MD and want to make sure of not running afoul of the law while rummaging around in Utah.  What are the limits and laws I need to know about when MDing wether I'm out in the middle of nowhere, prospecting, parks, etc.  Thanks for any input.  Greatly appreciated.

Go to the top right hand corner of any page and enter Utah into the search block. Be sure you have selected "Entire Forum" for the result and you will get lots of information. Some of it is not current. Laws change all the time. Nothing you find here should be taken as absolutely true or you will get yourself in trouble for certain. Verify everything.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

You could also search the net for a local MD club or prospecting club to join in your area.  They will be current on most things and you might learn what you need to know alot faster.

Welcome Hendro fellow Utahite! Things are pretty frozen here, I've posted on here a few times (and so has Toleary) on the forum. Now's a good time to do your research for sure. Check out libraries, possibly the Utah historical society for locations and possible sites. Always get permission when it's private property. Don't m/d in state parks - that's a no-no. However, you might be able to ask the park ranger if you can metal detect - but then you'd have to surrender everything you find over to them IF you get permission. I'm pretty sure that the national forest area and BLM areas are fair-game here. Mostly in the mountain sides you're going to find a LOT of spent rifle rounds from all the game hunting going on up here.  Smiley
