     Just got my first metal detector, although i'm not new to just exploring and seeing what i can find.  i have been doing alot of history reading of the state of utah in which i live.  i have been trying to find some places that were occupied at one time but currently aren't, i am just trying to narrow down my chances of picking up a pull tab as opposed to an artifact of historical value.  just wondering if anyone from utah had anything to share

toleary, I'm going to move this post to the Utah section.   

Living in Arizona, members of my md club sometimes get up into Utah for extended weekends....so I've started to form a library of Utah history books.  I'll check through them and send you some titles.  Also get yourself some old highway maps (try for at least one per decade).  You can usually pick those up fairly inexpensively either on e-bay or in used bookstores and/or estates sales.  Comparing the old maps to a current highway map will show you towns that have "disappeared".

Toleary,
Hi, I live up in the Layton area - and haven't done more than just scanning the sandy area of park playgrounds and volleyball areas. Got lots of pennies, and some other coins. I've also gone off into the hills/mountains a couple times, but more Utahn's are big-time hunters, so most of your hits up there are going to be empty rifle cartridges. I'd love to get my hands on some of those old Mormon gold coins!

I live in layton as well. I have had my metal detector for a few years but have used it very little. I am starting to become much more active now and I am also researching areas. I have found many possibilities in this state. It is quite rich in history. My first suggestion to you would be Lake Park (The original location of Lagoon) I haven't locked down the exact coords yet but I am very close and the area is undeveloped.
