If anyone has read about the military gold shipment around 1870, $60,000 in gold and camping near the fork of Huntington, Cottonwood creeks in Emery County. One of the 2 soldiers decided to shoot his buddy and claim indians attacked and stole the gold. He just buried it near the fork. After his day in court and being sentenced to 20 years, he returned to recover his gold and spent 3 months digging holes. What he failed to realize is that these creeks at spring runoff become raging torrents, especially Cottonwood. I lived near it before Joe's Valley Reservoir was constructed in 1966. That gold chest was probably washed several yards before it broke open and the coins being distributed for several miles downstream. Any that are in the streambed are at least 11 feet deep. Coins stink 1" a yr.
Just a thought.
There were 4 searches along the Donner party route. The latest was in 1990, by the University of Utah. They searched 200 yards on both sides of the trail with the latest equipment(metal detectors) Then I found an article that said, $15,000.00 in gold(face value) was found buried near Donner Lake many years ago. That was the exact amount being carried by George Donner.
