Doc Noss - Victoria Peak Treasure

I think the Govmt. had the Air Force go in and execavate near the peak and remove the Gold. I read the account of what happened and I believe it was there. He and his friend really messed up in trying to blow a bigger and easier entrance. They wound up sealing the entrance and WSMR encompassed the Peak and made it impossible to get to. I kind of doubt if it's still there, but who knows unless they could go onto WSMR and check it out??

After reading a bit I remember it, first saw it on the unsolved mysteries show back in the day. I was looking through old papers but nothing comes up much until the military court battles. Interesting case made complicated by everything done under the table so to speak.
Did any records come to light as to actual claims on the land?

I'll say this much, I'm convinced that if there ever was a massive treasure at Victorio Peak, it isn't there now. Of course, the odds of us finding out for sure are somewhere between slim and none since it is very deep within a highly restricted government facility which is used for live fire testing/training (so anyone who thinks they could probably slip in and slip out without being found out should think again). The stories of the treasure are well enough known and have been for long enough, that I'm pretty sure the government would have slipped out anything that might have been there before they permitted any of the few exploration/recovery ventures that have been mounted since Noss died to have access to the peak. (Further all of those official exploration attempts have occurred under the very watchful eye of the government.)

Also were is the gold others are said to have moved.
Look's like we all agree that what ever was there is now gone and as BA points out we will never know where it went.

Still, tracking down the gold that supposedly was taken by various individuals (as opposed to that removed by the government) could be a profitable exercise for a determined cache hunter (especially given the "illicit" nature of the acquisition).....If any of us is to profit from the Victorio Peak legends, odds are it will happen because we tracked down one of these "samples".

This story has always been interesting for me after seeing a TV program Unsolved Mysteries many years ago.
There has been many claims in regards to this story.
I wonder if there is any early documentation to support the story before the conspiracy theorist took over?

Before we get into all the government involvement lets look at a couple other things.
As Doc continued to explore the side caverns, he found a hoard of treasure including coins, jewels, saddles and priceless artifacts including a gold statue of the Virgin Mary. He also found some old letters, the most recent of which was dated 1880.
Thats the statement on dozens of web pages and in most early accounts not till after his death do the story's of stacks of gold bars start to pop up.
If there were gold coins why did he not bring them out? They would be easier to move and easier to sale.
The other reports of the find talk only of gold bars not of coins letters, artifacts, etc. Were there two treasures one still uncovered?

So if you could only carry out 1 thing at a time (taking the story to heart where it talked of the passage being hard to navigate) I guess I might grab a big bar over coins. Also it was illegal to own gold at the time so perhaps he might have left it there until he found a place to store it.

If it was hard to navigate who would take the time to store that much gold there? If you had that kind of manpower wouldnt you just dig a vault?
How far would you carry a pile of gold if you were planning to rebury it?

Adding to the pros.....Victorio Peak is close enough to the journado del muerte connecting El Paso (and Mexico City) with Santa Fe and the outlying Northern New Mexico towns and mines that it would have been a good base of operations for a band of brigands bent on preying on travellers between Mexico and Santa Fe.....so yes, it is possible that Doc found a stash of loot there (although I really doubt it was anywhere near as large as legend would have us believe, or even anywhere near as large Doc would have wanted his investor to think it was)
