The only thing I have found real about this treasure story is the stone maps themselves. I have held them in my hands, therefore I know they exist. Can't say that about the lost treasure though. If there is a buried treasure where the maps say they are, you cannot retrieve it. It is now a wilderness area where nothing is allowed except foot traffic and horseback riding. No mining, no treasure hunting, no metal detectors, no vehicles, no helicopters. I have traveled every nook, cranny, hill and creek in the Superstition mountains. When it was legal back in the 70's I did a lot of gold panning and metal detecting there. I have found no traces of gold anywhere. The nearest thing I have found to metals were some old mine shafts dug down on chalcopyrite veins that petered out a few 10's of feet down. Arizona geologists all agree it is not a gold forming environment. The nearest valuable metals zone is 20 miles away. The gold veins in the state are in a band that is even much further away. If anything of value were buried there, it would have to have been transported there from somewhere else. Doesn't matter anyway, they won't let you take it out.
I started writing a book about my adventures in the Superstition Mountains and my many searches and research into the Peralta stone maps a few years back but will have to get back to it again someday.
No one has produced a single grain of gold from there nor a picture, nor a verifiable eye witness event. The original story was featured in Life magazine, and the author Travis Marlowe (a fake name) was supposedly to have been found by a road near where black mountain is and not far from Comet peak. It tells of a lot of digging he did over quite some time to find all of the stones, and then he left. There is no evidence of digging anywhere in that area which is easily checked out in a single day. Another thing, if the stones were buried in 1847, they would have had some wear on the writing on the heart stone. The writing is just as sharp as if it was carved yesterday.
My Opinion? A good script for a lost treasure movie.

I saw these books being advertised about 3 year ago on the internet. Only the first one was available at the time but every time I tried to purchase it I couldn't get through to the reported seller. Last year sometime I saw that all three were available on Amazon kindle books. I waited a while and recently purchased them on my Kindle Fire. I haven't had a chance to get them read yet - it's still summer and I've got to detect more and ride my Harley! I'm sure that when I'm done reading I'll be able to walk right up to what's left of the treasure, load it up and ride away into the sunset! All I'll leave behind is this: [mad]

i know the john character. he admitted that about 10 percent of the books was true. there was a doc noss and that chandlers book 100 tons of gold was his inspiration. go figure.
