Hi Guys

Other that possibly keeping the coils balanced is there any other reason to shield the TX coil?

If you have a very sensitive machine, shielding can help prevent your detecting of your own down shaft. Some manufacturers use plastic for the last foot or so but if you have a very sensitive detector, that's simply not long enough. Shielding will prevent upward patterns from being sensed by the RX coil to a large degree. I don't believe what some think. There is a camp that believes the shielding acts as a "radar like" dish to increase the TX signal. I believe that the eddy currents set up on the shielding prevent that. Opinions vary though.

RFI and EMI.    Out side signal sources to a degree.

And I would have thought that the shielding on the TX side would prevent some of the energy of getting to the target. I'm going to try shielding only the RX coil to see what happens, at the moment I did the coil with no shielding at all, detection is great but I'm getting a lot of interference (This is on the TGSL)

Homefire, hardly anything operates at such a low frequency. Ultrasonic alarm systems do but their range is very limited. If you are really worried about those things, shield your control box. Your cell phone can interfere with your processor. That's why most modern, plastic housed detector controls are heavily shielded. But your coil is operating at a maximum of 200khz and a cell phone operates at 1000 times that frequency. The only thing I would worry about is 50/60hz power lines but even then, only from the high tension lines.

Yep they don't much like that 60Hz.

We have  a Aero State just out of town that once in a while messes with about any detector I've used.   You can hear it when it sweeps you.

That's not down to your coil, Homefire. That's getting straight into your speaker by the speaker coil.

It hits every thing.       We have some High Tension lines running at 370,000 volts just north of me.   The EMF coming off those things is so strong you get shocked touching your truck.    There are a few old home sites I'd love to hunt by them but It's never going to happen with Any detector.

Have you ever used Graphite in side the coil housing?

I haven't. It seems as if it would be light enough but the process uses epoxy to bond the fibers so it may only be light because it's normally hollow.

Graphite paint and window heater fix to a wire could work.   Not tried it but it could.
