Here in the UK whenever we were working on the worse soils/iron contaminated sites. we would use the compass 77b. one of the only machines that would work on the thames foreshore.over the last 30 years i have lost count how many detectors i have owned, including 15 years detecting full time for a living. and i still rate the 77b the best machine i ever owned. i brought the later auto legend version as well but never thought it had the punch of the original. if anybody decides to build them again put me on the list. i also have a original coin hustler, that i only keep as a reminder that it helped pay for my house

Hi Eugene

Aye, I got it safe and sound, cheers.  You may be assured that I most certainly shall mention that the lead came via Thunting.com.  I just have to make sure I get the time difference the right way around so that I don't wake the chap up in the middle of the night! Smiley

Best regards and thanks again

Hello Galileo . If you do not ship out your Compass X200  for repair , you are very welcome to take clear photos of the circuit board [both sides] and post it here . Did you take it apart and do any troubleshooting yet ?  Keep us posted !! Thank-You

Hi Eugene

Aye, I fully intend to take and post a comprehensive range of photographs in due course, before sending the machine off across the pond.  I'm in the process of moving my workshop into other premises so that's holding me up on the troubleshooting front, but my plan is to have a crack at it myself before sending it away.

An interesting, possibly diagnostic observation, is that the array of LEDs which serve as a backlight to the meter unit, fails to illuminate when the relevant touchpad is pressed.  I'm wondering if that symptom is a small part of one single, larger picture.  If it is, then tracing what should in theory be a relatively straightforward route from touchpad switch to LED chain, may reveal a fault which, when fixed, might resolve the discrimination issues or if not, might just serve as a way in to the circuitry as a whole.  As we say in archaeology, "work from the known."  Smiley

I should have something more substantive to report in a few days and I thank you for your interest.

Cheers

I have a CUE Electronics (cant remember model #) discriminating detector that has problems. I understand CUE was under Compass or Compass made products for them?  I took the pc board out and ordered replacement IC chips and Xistors to effectively replace all of them. They were cheap in cost so it's sometimes easier to simply replace rather than spend time narrowing it down to a component or two. I can't fins any literature, service or user's guide on the CUE line. Any one here capable of adding worthwhile info about CUE detectors?

Hello Hi-Tech . If you researched the internet already , the Cue series of Metal Detectors were made by Compass in the late 1970's for the French market . 4 models made were the ER10, ER30 , ER40 and ER100 . The ER10 was equivelent to the Coin Hustler . If you own the ER100 , that model might be worth repairing and field testing . I have not seen any Cue schematics , yet . Maybe someone else on the Forum has more information .
HH............Eugene

Thanks for the relpy. The model # is TR-501 which isn't close to those models you posted. If you or others can provide me with any info. or leads to go by for my further research, I'd appreciate it. The single-sided circuit board is stuffed with IC chips and transistors. The coil head is about 7-8" round plastic housing silkscreened with: THE DISCRIMINATOR

they are former employees of Compass who have the rights to repair the Compass line. The rest of the Compass schematics might not be released for many years !!

The patents would have expired on the detector. In fact, so has the trademark for the detectors! It's true that the schematics may not be released, but there is little that they (or anyone) can do to stop someone from tracing out the schematic.

In addition, people are reporting less than reliable repairs made by the one guy who does have the schematics in his possession (i.e. possibly due to a lack of access to some parts)!
