I have seen a number of DD coil designs, but I couldn't find regular rules about calculations for number of turns, diameter, and thickness of wire. can any one please help me to find these rules?

Hi Rabbani

There are no set rules to making a coil however if a coil is being made for an existing design then you need to know what the coil specs are before making it for that detector.  Inductance,  frequency,  coil diameterand wire gauge,  Hope this helps some

Regards Xavier

thank you for your replies, both were helpful, but existing designs that I have found have a poor sensitivity(<50cm). I want to make my own design. I have made a double D coil with 70 turns for each coil and use a ca3130 for amplifying of rx coil output.the oscillator was 12V and 16khz sinusoid wave. but I didn't observe any phase difference between tow waves. I didn't use any capacitor in parallel with coils. i have seen that a capacitor is used in DD coils usually. what is the importance of this capacitor? what relation exists between this capacitor and inductance of coils?

Your RX coil will have more turns than your TX coil also 50cm depth is not bad at all and as for the capacitor it is there to prevent spikes.

tanks, but I have also another question. Is there any formula for calculating proper capacity for this capacitor? Also about inductance of TX ans RX coils.

Here is some good info on the subject

Inductance is measured with an inductance meter now let us assume that you want to make a detector coil of 16Khz using an LC circuit, depending on your capacitor you will have more or less turns of wire for a coil of diameter X obviously this number will change if you change the size of the coil because the length of wire will remain the same, this in turn will affect the inductance of the coil, another thing that will change is the internal capacitance of the coil. Winding the coil loosely will have an inductance much lower than the same coil wound tightly. Here is the formula for an LC resonant circuit   2*PI*F = 1/SQRT(LC)
