I should also have added that I used a DG201 for the CMOS switch. I decided to use 6 AA cells for the convenience of longer life. The speaker is inside the box - there are holes at the back, covered in speaker fabric. you can see from this view how tidy it is (I changed the wire on the 3pin plug to screened this morning. I made the BIG mistake of spraying the pcb with conformal coating, forgetting what happened the last time i did this.
The coating spray finds its way into all the sockets and plugs. The result is a fine coating everywhere that causes the most horrible faults to be tracked down. In the end I took all the ICs out, washed the board in ISO-P, cleaned all the IC legs and put it back together. That fixed it!
The front, if you can read it, shows the controls etc and the low current LED for power/low battery (it flashes when the battery drops below 6v8.
The unit fits to the stick (handle ?) by the two knurled knobs in the sides. This lets me slightly adjust the angle of the box. I hate DIN plugs because they are a bit of a pig to solder and break easily. However, the all metal types are not bad and as I happened to have a 7pin and a socket, thats what I used for the head. I ran two screened cables, Tx and Rx pairs, with the screens grounded at the control box end - grounding very important!
