Thanks Xavier

Looking at the site for the LC Meter,  the links barely worked but it did show a updated LC.  though looking at this circuit it is a tad overwhelming especially since i dont know what some of the symbols mean.  I do have a few questions after reviewing this.

1) how do i program the pic? probably need an external device correct?
2) also i see these weird rectangles with 2 circles in them (listed as LK1, 2 and 3) on the site you sent me to

is it bad that i think the VLF circuit is a lot easier than the LC?

building your own its fun, you learn allot, and you save a tone  of money. Smiley
on the other hand there are some very very chip LC meters on ebay that the parts alone will cost you 3-4 times as much. Shocked

Are you just planning to build a detector or do you want to take this further?

nickel_n, homefire, thanks for the input.  I was actually thinking of getting a LC meter from amazon,  something like this:

Xavier,

My initial short term goal is to build a detector see if i like it and then move on from there.  I would like to get into more electronics a bit down the road.

Well if you're planning to do it further it will be worth your while to get set up with the right test equipment. That LC meter is just what you need, you will have to get an enclosure for it though, that's one reason why they're so cheap.

Xavier. The case is not an issue if the lc meter would work.  As for the detector goes I found the plans on this site I just have to find time to get all the parts... And look at building the coil. Are there any hardware details I should be aware of?
