Hi,
Stumbled on a design for an I/B detector in a mag from 2002 the "EPE BOUNTY".
It only uses a handful of components and looks like you could put it together in a day EASY.
The author claims it'll do 9.5 inches (25cm) on a 1" coin!
The design is incredibly simple, I'll see if I can get it scanned and posted in the next day or two.

Hi,
Just found it online!

Thanks, mate. I just happen to have that issue. Great mag, too.

Hi GD,
I'm gonna have a go at that this week as I have all the bits in the "spares" box.
Let you know how it goes.....
 Great

One thing I don't like is his Faraday shield arrangement. I'd mount the two coils and lay the foil over the entire top but not the bottom. Wrapping it will, in my opinion, decrease the sensitivity of the receiver coil substantially. Perhaps when you try it you could see if the shield is even necessary. Laying the foil over the top will accomplish nearly the same thing regarding shielding. Pressing the foil to conform to the shape of the coil from the top of the coil profile to the mounting board is all you really need. That leaves the entire bottom side of the coils free of any ground plane and the receiver coil gets a much bigger ground plane where it needs it. From behind.

Hi GD,
Yes, liking that idea!
Also thinking how small this can be made using smd's!

A friend of mine in San Diego made one of his own design with all the electronics except the battery mounted just above the coil. One thing wrong? The detector swamped itself originally because of all the metal in proximity to the coil. Using SMD which has low metal mass compared to through hole, he was able to mount it a mere 2 inches above the coil which kept his lead length very short from detector to coil.

He used it to great success over the years. I've lost touch with him now and you just reminded me that it's high time I renewed an old friendship.

Off the the White Pages in San Diego! I'll invite him to join here when I find him.

Hi GD,
What do you think of the idea of using a precision comparator (lm311 or similar) as the peak detector in this? (rather than part of the Schmitt)
Do you think there would be anything to gain?

It's always faster to use analog components rather than make the mistake of converting it to digital level first. Would you believe that White's latest patents convert received signals to a digital signal first for processing? I'd do both, myself, but they convert first and have a separate processor for analyzing. No matter how fast the digital analysis is, it's very slow compared to analog.

Are you planning on doing any signal analysis based on the output? If so, I presume you'll be using some nonlinear filtering in advance of the LM311. If so, I'd give any target a "go/no-go" test for gold and silver via a multiple input comparator. I've been looking at this one.

From a single source (the receiver circuit), I'd feed the output through four separate op amps (in one chip of course) then filter each output into a single LTC1445. You'd have a digital representation of the probable target available for later analysis and preserve the original signal. If you do an active comparison to all outputs to the original transmitted signal you should have some fantastic results.
