Xavier,

I assume then that the TGSL is  a vlf detector. I am not familiar with it. My post was for a PI except for the coil shape information You are right on track with watching the frequency and not the inductance. Get the overall capacitance right and it will resonate perfectly. A DD coil is good for covering a lot of  ground but a little short on pinpointing. However it is a whole lot easier to construct  and balance than the concentric coil. The amount of inductance change is an indicative sign of sensitivity. The larger the change, the easier it is to build circuits that will detect that change plus aid in determining metal types.
Keep us informed of your progress. I enjoy reading your posts.
I also sent the enlarged copy of my pi locator to your email. Hope it helps.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

That detector has been running for some time now,  I ended up making a coplanar coil for it an it worked well I say well because in my move to Europe I had to leave the coil behind,  it was either that or leaving more important stuff.  I'm going to be starting to experiment with a basket coil on that detector,  should be fun.

Regards

Xavier,
Good luck on the basket coil idea. I tried 2 different ones and was not satisfied. I feel that coplanar coils are still the best bet because circular coils provide the most inductance change per square inch of coil. Inductance affects reactance and reactance affects frequency. What do you say? Smiley

The idea is to have an ordinary TX coil and use the basket coil for the RX, I have started making the coil and so far the only disadvantage that I can see to the basket coil is that you can't make a coil smaller than what the basket coil will alow you to. The way that I see it at the moment the smallest coil that I would be able to make would be in the vicinity of 220mm diameter other than that the basket coil should make a terrific receiver coil. I'll only be able to tell you more about it once I've done some tests with it, at the moment I'm just speculating.

Best of luck Xavier. Maybe you will stumble on to something that we all can use.

Grin Well I did manage to find that I have a problem with the detector and right now I'm at a total loss,  sometimes it's a good idea to just put it all down and do something else for a while. Going detecting in the morning hope that,  that will be the needed medication for this brain of mine.  Grin
