Not sure where to look to solve this problem.
A Groundhog ADS I bought is working but the threshold increases when you touch the handle.
Couldn't see any grounding problems, I am sure it's there somewhere.

I did try disconnecting the retune toggle switch on the handle from the PCB. Threshold still rises when handle is touched.

Any chance it might be coil connector related?
Any help is appreciated.

Look at the coil  connector inside the case.

Is it grounded well?

Does it do that when outside away from electrical fields?

Try drying the coil out at about 125 degrees F for 48 hours. I had moisture in my coil connection.

I actually added another ground wire from the board to the connector screw in hopes this would solve it. Didn't
Also replaced the box connector from my used parts box from another Garret tand used a different coil, problem still exists. Then switched back to the orig connector.
No change. Possible the other used box connector has a problem also.

I am going to order a new set of connectors anyways as.

The unit is still usable in current condition. For sure threshold is stable by switching to auto mode--a bandage cure.

The Auto mode is not a ground track mode like other detectors.   It just maintains a constant threshold tone.   Masking the problem.

Could be a faulty cap someplace is my bet.

Does the Meter movement creap up with the tone?

I have the schematic for that beast if you need it.

The meter does move up with the threshold.
I have the Master Hunter ADS 5.5khz schematic but that is not the same as the Groundhog ADS 15khz. So if you have the actual Groundhg schematic, would like to have it.

I think the only difference in those would be the front end.

Someone mentioned replacing the electro caps and it would fix the problem.
I actually did replace them a month ago, the problem was there before that. But, that did not fix it.
To clarify the threshold rises about 5 bars on the meter from where you set the threshold.

Ok, Try this.

There is a little piggy back board on your mother board that is a Sample and Hold circuit for the threshold.

Change the caps on it.

This one is on a S-4 detector but yours will look the same.
