No mater what any one tells you there is NO SUCH THING as a discriminating PI detector.

Sorry to burst your bubble but that IS discrimination, mate.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Back to the original question.... I am looking for waterproof connectors if anyone has any info..... I will be your slave..... well I will be flipping cartwheels... well I'd be very happy =)

They are available from a number of sources but if you are looking for those that mate with your current detector you will have to buy them from Garrett. Theirs are proprietary, meaning they had them custom made for themselves.

Awesome....I'd love to change my coils out without the risk of water damage... thanks

Hello . Your search coil and cable should be waterproof . I think we figured out you had the Garrett VLF model . So buy one female waterproof panel mount for the detectors housing [plastic case] and 2 or 3 matching waterproof male din plugs and solder correctly [proper pin line-up/configuration]to the end of each search coil cable . One more thing very important , is you can optimise the TX capacitor on the circuit board "if necessary" , if you have an oscilloscope . This will Peak the waveform for maximum transmit "peak to peak" ......I will try to post some more connector retailers .
Regards.......Eugene

Thanks... I did manage to find a few companies out there that had some connectors..thanks to the fine folks here... I was skeptical on some that I found marked waterproof..... as it will need to go down to 200FT

I don't want to lose my watertight integrety... as far as the TX capacitor.. please explain.. I would like this thing to work at its max peak

Thanks,
Keith

Hello . Some Metal Detector manufacturers have whats called a TX and RX capacitor installed on the circuit board which optimises the Search-coil with the [tx] transmit Oscillator and  [rx] recieve circuit . When search coils get old they change sometimes and do not work like new . An example is,  Nautilus metal detectors have to be sent back to the factory and re-tweaked . The reason I brought this up is your Garrett vlf is old and may need some tweaking or maybe it is fine and you should not worry . Just like an old Whites 5000 may need maintenance because of its age . I guess we can call it an alignment . Others are welcome to comment on the subject of electronic components changing , due to age , heat or moisture !!
HH.............Eugene

Got it... Makes total sense.... I do have schematics and pics of the main board, complements of this forum... I do have an O-scope... but not much training on how to use it.... I am always learning something new.... I hope to get this thing better than new... I like the older technology.... but she sure is ugly..... she looks like someones science project... but seems to work great... but can be better =) There really isn't much to the components/ circuitry.... very basic looking...

Keith

ksightler;

Not knowing what kind of oscilloscope you have, I can only guess, but one way is feed your signal in the vertical amp and ajust your horizontal scan rate until you get at least 3 or 4 wave forms, one is nicer, but 2 will do. then use the grid, on the tube face, to guage your adjustment.   Pray

Of course, this is assuming your pulse rate is not faster than your maximum scan rate. I used to use a 10 mHz scope on 27 mHz CBs, wave form did not matter when doing a 2 tone test.

I once had a 200 pound boat anchor, that was x-UK navy issue.... never did get it to work.  Violent

Your a funny guy... Grin  I have to find my O-scope... probably somewhere in the garage... I have never used it.. I have turned it on and it does power up... It was a freebee when I bought a radar for my boat... The info you stated on the last posting sounds pretty technical... looks like I need to take a class on how to use it....
