mmm I initially thought radar in my ignorance Wink It would do the job no doubt as depth of earth attenuation in my "find the arrow" case is not a problem.  But radar is a reflection and measure of its time to return and on my very small distances to target, the time diff would be almost impossible to discern. Undecided

the propagation delay could be lengthened by useing ultrasound instead of radiowaves, then it would i believe be sufficiently long to be measured after being converted back to an electrical signal. Much as a bat can detect a mosquito until its in its tail.

sounds like i could learn alot about them from you. I am interested in the various types of circuits used and their theory of operations. I have already learned quite a bit just from reading here an hour or so, it is really hard to find books on the subject.

How did you find a job working on metal detectors, through one of the manufactures?

yes rick55 spill the beans Smiley
are we heading up the wrong path...

I too thought about ultrasonics electech2u.I dont think it would work in my case. it would take a fair smarts to "see a metal arrow behind a wooden branch". but then moving 4m sideways should fix that..

something tells me that the metal head  should "ping" a lot louder than the surrounding foliage, Im just not sure what to ping it with just now Wink

I have worked in a steel mill since march 29,1973 and just got laid off jan 2, thats why i have so much time now to look into things like this, and ive been buying lots of books and reading up on some new areas. I know what you mean by the enormity of some industrial equipment, we have overhead cranes that carry 300 ton lifts, and the machine i run will carry 160 tons in a lift (more actually but that is the official LD LMT.
