Xavier, a bit of advice. When using a switch mode voltage booster with a single IC, the current is so low that it is normally only used as reference voltage. If you want to use it to power an entire detector, use an FET output version to give you more current. No free lunch though. If you do that, your batteries will drain at a rapid rate.

Your best option is to use two 12 volt battery packs. One for positive and one for negative.

Xavier - How much current is required by the plus and minus 12 volt supplies?

That's even less efficient on the batteries. What's wrong with two thin pack gel cell batteries of 12 volts each? Or a LiPo pack of 14 volts? Either of them would do the job and power the machine for hours.

Do you already have a metal detector or will this be your main machine?

Well I have build one and I have found that I was having problems with the oscillator due to some drifting so I thought that I would build a new and better one. I changed the audio to a more sophisticated audio generator with tone control and speed of the intermittent beep(for fun really) as for the receiver I have not yet looked at the possibilities yet as I am concentrating on the transmitter at the moment what I did do though is I build my self a variable frequency injector that is working fine but I need to replace the Op-Amp to get it at the right frequency(wien bridge oscillator) now if I can get a diagram of a stable sin wave oscillator that will perform with +5 0 -5 I?ll be ok let's face it it's #@%$ hard to design some thing that works well

Regards
Xavier

You have two relatively inexpensive options for stable oscillators. The first is a crystal oscillator. Crystals in the audio range are easy to find if you take a digital watch apart. You'll find inside a 32.678 khz crystal which can be used to make a very cheap crystal oscillator. The frequency can be divided using a number of techniques giving you a 16.339 khz base frequency which should be close enough for your use.

The second option is a phased lock loop (PLL) circuit which will stabilize your oscillator and lock it on to a reference frequency. Using a voltage controlled oscillator and a feedback loop, you can lock the frequency to a range of frequencies but each will need a rock solid reference. Here's a basic tutorial.

Before this is over, mate, you are going to have a fair background in electronics. There are other options for you to investigate but these two are the simplest. PLL chips are inexpensive and require few external components. Crystal oscillators are also cheap since an audio frequency crystal can be salvaged from a $2.00 thrift shop watch.

Thanks GD I have been thinking a lot about crystal oscillators and VCO I like the VCO because you can always do some correction between the RX and TX.
Now I will go and check out that tutorial, thanks mate.
