Go Up Go Down

Hi everyone,

I've bought a cheap 6000D off Ebay and the old girl only works intermittently.  I first thought it had something to do with the ground balance pot as it was pretty stiff so I unsoldered the pot from the board, cleaned and replaced and whilst the pot now works properly it hasn't solved the problem.  I reckon it's either the battery holders or the battery terminal solder connections on the board.  Some previous shoddy resoldering has been done here which I will fix but I want to confirm that it's wired up right.  Can anyone tell me (or supply a diagram) the correct pads on the board for the wires from the 12V and 9V battery packs.....the way it is set up now just doesn't look right.   Also I've notice a fair bit of oxidisation around the headphone jack terminals on the pcb.  Is this a problem area for these detectors?

Everything you mentioned could be a issue.

Get some photos of the wiring right now before some of them break. Then you'll be asking where each one goes. Go on. Get your camera and do it now.

You'll thank me later.

Maybe so, except when I tell folks about your expertise with coil experimentation. Now THAT's wise, mate.

Grin Grin Grin I'm still learning GD. I sometimes think that coil design is the most complex part in electronics, speaking of coils my inductance meter is playing up so I have decided to use a new method with a Colpitts oscillator. My method would be 1 / Ct = 9.1pf (10pf * 100pf / 10pf + 100pf) * 0.006 * 100 = 879.5Khz. (If I = 6mH, fr = 879.5Khz) this connected to the scope and to the coil being wound will work as an inductance meter. I could make a simple PCB for it, the nice thing is that it's simple to make and in-expensive, and should be quite accurate not to mention that any one with a PC could use it if he has PC scope on it.  What do you think?  Or am I getting lost in my thoughts again LOL

You're absolutely right, Xavier. Which is why a coil is almost always the first item to be designed by a detector manufacturer. Once the parameters of that are set, other sizes can be made to match the parameters and the electronic control portion can be designed. To analyze the electronics portion and reverse engineer a coil is where even the best engineers meet their Waterloo.
