POLL: Discriminating Probe

(1/1)

GoldDigger1950:
A discussion in another forum topic elicited interest about pinpointing probes that were able to discriminate between metals. Is this something that, if it were available, you would be interested in owning and using?

Your vote and any discussion on this is appreciated.

I wouldn't have much use for a discriminating probe if it were of the "normal"configuration........On the other hand if I had something like the old Garrett Pocket Probe or the Vibra-Tector that discriminated, I could see using that on walls and other vertical surfaces.    Be a bit more convenient that the full size detector.

I figure that almost any target dug was uprooted because you'd already discriminated. It's hard to imagine a need to reduce the effectiveness of the probe by making it discriminate. You stand a good chance of missing some good things if you tweak it too far from zero.

You know what he is right. There is no need for discrimination on a probe. It is already done by the detector. :-\

just for the record, if you go back and read what I wrote, I wasn't talking about using discrimination on a pinpointer to pinpoint the location of a target found with a full-sized detector.   I was saying I could see the benefit of discrimination in a small hand-held detector about the size of a pinpointer if I were working in an area I couldn't get my standard detector into (like a crawlspace or the walls of a closet).

As for discrimination on a standard pinpointer used for normal pinpointing purposes-----I fully agree with the rest of you......but for use where I can't get a full size detector, that's a whole other story.

BA, it looks like the poll is swinging towards "Yes" at this point so a lot of folks think like you. As long as you can switch it off when you need to, I'd go for one. But overall, it sounds like the general consensus is to have it.
