Go Up Go Down

Hello,

Looking for a decent ground penetrating radar unit, at a decent price. Also looking to buy a  side scan sonar or something similar. I would like something that can show anomalies below the ocean floor if possible. Also looking for a good deal on a magnetometer. Last but not least, does anyone reading this have first hand experience with the supposed "auras" or emanations that buried metal give off. What I have read says that with a special filter (ultraviolet?) a digital camera can capture these emanations.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Fish finders, such as those from Humingbird, have side scan sonar capability.   But I'm not sure about how deep it can go.   The item by nmarsh looks pretty cool.  Not sure how you were planning to use GPR on the ocean.   But GPR, especially those at higher frequencies (~1 GHz), will not penetrate very far into ocean water.  Lower frequency GPR has been used to look in fresh water, but you would probably be better off to use the side scan sonar for the ocean bottom.  Generally the side scan sonar and magnetometers are the most frequently used technology for looking for ocean bottom objects.

A high quality digital camera with many pixels and full color can be used if the water is not turbid.  Some have the ability to see in the near-infrared spectrum.   Use digital signal processing to enhance features.   There's also hyper- or multispectral imaging but I don't think that's appropiate here.

Good luck!!

Thank you for the reply, and suggestions. I have several projects, both on land and at sea, that's why I am looking for the various equipment. I am hoping to find technology that will allow me to see below the level of the sea bed. The wrecks are old, and side scan sonar while helpful cannot show the remains of a ship buried several feet under the sand or mud. The GPR is for locating tolas or ancient graves, and more recent buried ruins. I do have an underwater camera, but need an ROV to control the view. I also have a new fish finder and have found a company that sells add on kits to allow side scan sonar. Thanks again for taking the time to make suggestions.
