Hello Hi all, I'm a beginner and I'd like to buy a decent used metal detector, one that's not too heavy and with a coil that's waterproof . I want to hunt yards, parks and saltwater beaches. Ideally I'd love a detector that can be completely submerged. Yeah, I know, in my dreams..  :Smiley  Anybody upgrading and have one for sale?

I'm checking Craigslist, the internet, and ebay, as well as posting here. I JUST missed a great detector on craigslist, gotta remember to check it every day  Tongue

I called and asked if the price was for real. They said yes but shipping was delayed due to constantly being sold out and having to reorder more. I don't know how they do it.

Gertrude, the Tesoro line is a highly respected one and the Sand Shark is a top of the line underwater machine normally selling for a lot more. The original model was recalled for leaks that developed due to the battery having a removable access. They have redesigned the case and released it again. Early reports are that the case no longer leaks and Tesoro has a real winner there.

If you use PayPal to pay, you are completely guaranteed safety if they don't deliver. Whatever you do, don't use a credit card on your first purchase from any company. I do a lot of business with China, for example, and always use PayPal for at least the first few orders. If they prefer that payment method, I am happy to stay with it for the protection up to $5,000.00.

Rider Ok, thanks for the info on the Tesoro, it looks like a heck of a deal. The only drawback is it weighs 6 lbs. That's nothing in the water, but on land my arm would probably fall off before I got to the tot lot, and I'll be on land more than I'd be in the water.

I also wonder how to make sure that it's not one of the older leaky models. That website only has a 30 day return policy, so I'll try to get a number for the manufacturer and see what the 5 year warranty covers.

I didn't know that paypal protected the buyer better than a credit card, and I would've used the CC, who knew?!

Gertrude, the 6 pound weight is a shipping weight. The unit itself is not that heavy. See the spec here:

Some of the weight will be worn on your head. Waterproof headsets are not light like the common everyday stereo headsets. I would not fear the overall weight. They are ergonomically designed with the balance at the wrist and the arm support makes it easy to use. If necessary, you can add a bungee style harness with the money you save buying it at such a deep discount.

The unit pictured is indeed the old style unit but take heart. Not every one of them leaked and the comments I heard from those having a leak said that a bit of scuba diver's silicon grease fixed things up. The purists wanted it to be automatically maintenance free. I open my Garrett Sea Hunter frequently to keep the unit in top shape and always reseal it with the silicon grease. You might want to call the seller and ask which unit they are selling at that price.

It was a serendipitous find when I was searching for something else. A great deal, true.

Thanks, you answered my newest questions BEFORE I even had a chance to ask. Great You must be a mind reader  Grin  I was researching the sand shark and saw that the detector "control thingy" is very different than the "control thingy" on the Sand shark at the site you found, so I was concerned that it might be a fake.

Does it get ruined if it leaks?  No no!

The battery compartment is separate from the entire unit so damage would be limited. Try it in your sink or bathtub using fresh water first to see how it does. Fresh water won't do nearly as much damage as salt water. If it leaks, be prepared to seal it with grease every time you use it.

One of our sponsors here is KellyCo and they have a great deal on the most modern version of the Sand Shark.

Scroll down to see both the Sand Shark and Tiger Shark models. Both are superb choices for water hunting.

One question, are we SURE this is the Tesoro Sand Shark?   It doesn't look like it and it doesn't have the price I would expect to pay for a Tesoro Sand Shark.   I don't think the Metal Detector Town Sand Shark is the same thing as the Tesoro Sand Shark (of course, I have been known to be wrong)
