Washington where I am is quite different than Idaho where I was.  What to say about the Vancouver area?  Dark and foggy.  The forrests look like something out of a Lord of the Rings movie.  Fog, moss growing on everything.  Even the rocks in the streams are mostly dark or black.  Lots of hot and cold rocks.  Volcanic ash is not hard to find.  I've been exploring parts of the Lewis river.  If I read their rules right, panning season is over.  Still can MD in some areas.  Placer gold has been found in the Lewis and even in the county I am in.  I'm not seeing any quartz in the Lewis river or surrounding areas.

I'm joining a local prospecting club and going to visit the forest service this week so I can get started.

Panning can be done year round, but you have to pay attention to the rules. In some places (rivers and streams) no panning is allowed during the spawning season for certain species of salmon. Rules are different for state vs federal lands/ forrests as well. Make sure you have the GOLD AND FISH pamphlet printed and in your possession (that is your permit for all prospecting up to a 4" dredge). Good luck!
