This was found on a 1750 homestead where the land itself dates back to around 1699 I believe it is made of brass it is 1&1/4" diameter and very thin looks like something was attached on the back like it may be a button.Foiled

Just hazarding a guess here but notice the little suns each have a dimple. The fact they are offset has to mean something as the rest of the piece is flawless so I'm guessing it could be a moon phase representation. The positions mirror each opposite side it looks like.

Or just a really big button.

In any case it's quite a unique find. Congrats!

I must be going nuts. I could have sworn I replied to this in another topic.

I suspect this may be door or window rosette. Based on your photo, it looks to be around 44mm or about 1 1/2 inches. If that's what it is, they were hammered or screwed in at the top left and right corners of the door or window trim on posh houses. That bit of metal in the center is probably where the nail or screw was brazed on.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Oh, thank God! I was just about to pour a stiff glass of Gentleman Jack to soothe the nerves. Oh, what the heck. It's been a hard weekend.

Cheers, mate!
