Again I'm still learning my XT . my question is a signal that jumps around from VDI 20 to 45 to 18 , should not be dug ? Only strong signals that don't jump ? How about a signal that stays on a certain number for a few swings then jumps to the neighboring number ( example 20-18-16...)?

As bomber said dig it all and my 2 cents worth don't rely on the meter to much, learn the tone of the singles after awhile you can tell what they mean. I believe one reason the Tesoro detectors are becoming so popular it that they  don't have meters.

Seldom

I agree with Bomber and Seldom.......unless you dig, you're not going to know what it is.   For all you know, it could be a small cache that includes a mixture of coin denominations or an old piece of filigree jewelry.

I once found a gold nugget that was close to a piece of wire.  My detector registered GOLD but the wire made my detector break up so I passed it by.  Five minutes later another TH'er found it and let out a whoop and a hollar.  Yep it is best to dig everything most of the time, you just never know.
