i had a look and i agree with Xavier, to open a boiler or stove.. looks like the back of it has been used to help pry open or knock closed again whatever it was used for.

Or in my opinion, it could be either a manhole cover hook or a handheld barrel hook

Grin Grin Grin Don't you just love these kind of objects, I do.  Cochase1 go out there and see if you can 1) find a dead horse or 2) find a coal stove, that should solve it LOL

Or even .. a rope tensioner for a curtain sided railway wagon .. the hook goes through the end of a hooped piece of rope which runs along the side of the wagon this is then pulled around the edge/side of the wagon to tension and then locked into place behind a bar.

... just trying to explain the cut/dinks in the back face of the hooked bar .. i would draw a picture of how i think it could be used .. but i'm not that good .. ish

like people say it could be used for loads of different things, thats the beauty of hooks  Grin
ya i too love these types of things

I like that he did say that he found the item near an old rail road

Don't mean to throw a wrench into the mix, but the cut marks on the back I think were done on purpose. If that is the case then it would have been done by Indians. They would have re-purposed it for a file. I am not sure those railroad tracks are that old. I am not sure if there was a train that ran through that country back then. I still like the thought of a boiler.

Thanks for some more insite.
