Go Up Go Down

This is 5 5/16 inches long and 2 3/16 inches tall.  The cup part is completely hollow.  I found this at my friends house in North Texas that dates to the late 1800's.  My only guess that it was something homemade to melt lead for ammunition?  If anybody has any clue I'd appreciate the help.  Thanks!

I am thinking a little simpler, such as part of a hand grip for some kind of coach or even a door. the round end looks like a socket for a hardwood rod to fit into.

I was thinking it could be some type of metalwork ladle, something with a wood handle that wouldn't conduct heat.  Maybe used with small amounts of melted metals for small castings.

I think Outback is on to something, I don't think perhaps it's a lead dipper or casting ladle maybe used to pour melted lead into bullet molds, or perhaps used by plumbers when pipes used to be sealed using melted lead on pipes.  Something along these lines?

Look at its size next to the quarter. Much too large to be a bullet mold. Besides, all of the molds, even field molds, had hinged openings to release the bullet. This is a classic dead end suggestion.

I make this comment because the link given was to a bullet mold, not a ladle.

This looks so familliar to me.  My grandparents farmed from the 30's thru the 70's and I would swear this is a pull end for a drawer or door.  Possibly an end from a bushel basket handle.  A wood dowel was placed in the hole between two of these items.  The handle was then bolted to whatever.....  Many times the wooden handle was used to insulate the hand from a hot item, ie. an iron or stove door.  However I have been unable to verify this with any photos from the web.   Undecided

Just a guess without proof.

Keep diggin
