I popped out this button today and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it
reads "BURG CO 7YR1780 ARCHID AVST DUX" it looks to be based on the Austrian 1 Thaler coin, Was it common to design buttons from coins?

The next one also looks to be Austrian I pulled 3 matching from a couple square feet last month. It says 1/4 FL at the bottom.

Interesting finds, Caleb!  I have no idea what they are.  Good luck finding some info on them!                 Detecting

Yes, but it was also common to use coins as buttons--especially foreign coins.   Without seeing the back, it's hard to tell whether you have one designed from a coin or one made from a coin.   But I lean towards the latter.

It is a thin copper face over a steel back, so I don't think it was originally a coin. The 1 thaler was also a silver coin from what I can find. I just thought it was a bit odd to find so many Austrian buttons way over here.

Beyond the fact that lot's of members of the former Austrian empire, including my Hungarian ancestors, settled in the US,  the coins would look great as blazer buttons.  They have the heraldic feel that many blazer manufacturers and purchasers went after and the actual coins were probably handy enough to use as patterns.

I didn't think there was that much recent immigration from Europe. My own roots trace back to Ireland and Germany so I guess that's pretty plausible.  It is a very cool button.

The immigration from Europe doesn't have to be recent for the coins to be used for inspiration.   In fact some designer could have been sifting through grandpa's junk drawer 50 or 60 years ago when the coins caught his eye and inspired him.  For that matter, they could have been going through the junk at the local rummage sale.

However, there was a sizable Hungarian immigration after the failed 1956 uprising.
