Found this item at a Boer war site from the 1890's in South Africa..... does anyone know what it is? I did think belt loop but it is too thick, and the size is just not right....

Sizes: 1 5/16" x 6/8" x 5/16" wide and just over a 1/16" thick..... It seems to be a chrome steel...

I believe it to be of British origin.....

It looks like the ring on a Stirrup.   Just not large enough.

Something to do with Horse Tack I'm sure.

Well, there seems to be quite a bit of size difference to the one you linked. But if you are satisfied, that's all that matters.

For another reference though, both the web belt and leather styles of sling used that same buckle and it is closer in size to what you have found. It was used to reverse the direction of pull and allow the sling to be made into a rapid pivot for the rifle to be aimed from an over the shoulder carry position. The rifle was carried barrel down and could be put to the shoulder with a simple flip of the wrist and lifting with the forearm.

I still believe you have what is left of a D ring on the old sling of the day. The rapid aiming sling was a radical "new" design back then and still in use today.

Golddigger1950,

I am still interested in knowing other ideas  Great can you give me any links etc.... I would love know it was from a rifle or something as that would sound most logical. Thanks for opening this topic up for me.... Could it maybe be used for both horse gear and slings Huh???

yes, most buckles and loops designed for use with leather and/or webbing can have multiple applications.
