It's a tool of some nature. I just can't remember if it has something to do with nets, or knots  Sad

Hi Spud,

Yep, makes sense. Nice area to search it appears.
Yes I figure maybe mid 19th century, looks older but the condition isnt as corroded as it would be for an 18 century submerged piece of hardened iron.

Cheers,
Jim

Thanks
I was wondering about how old it is. That's pretty cool. The port town close by was founded in about 1890. Next low tide when I have time I'll go back and look around some more. There was other iron pieces I found, now I'll look at them a little closer.
The railroad spikes weren't nearly as encrusted with barnacles as this piece was.

Hey RO,

I think you may be onto the right track, knots makes my memory snap alittle bit & I recall a knot jig being similar?

Cheers,
Jim

I believe it to be a rigging knot tool. Used in the fishing and whaleing trade.

Beaver tail log dog. Used to connect logs together into a log boom.

Awesome! That is exactly what it is all the way down to the measurments.
This one does look forged instead of tied wire though.
Very cool, thanks to everyone for looking.

Good Thing it's not encrusted with Jewels etc, or the courts would make you give it back to the Spanish.   Grin

They are generally used for tying log booms together, or for towing individual logs behind a boat. They are driven in with a large hammer. Smiley

Similar items were used on the big interior lakes here when booming logs to the sawmills - "log dogs" - not for the boom sticks themselves, but as a temporary way of securing individual logs.

...just another thought.
