Go Up Go Down

I have been cleaning this for a few days and the more i clean it the more it looks like a gold chunk. I don't have a gold tester, is there any other way to tell? it is a half inch thick and inch and half wide.  I pulled this up at the new ghost town site, it was about 15" down.

How I do love lumps of unknown metal...and you do have a nice hefty piece!

Here's a handy website that'll guide you through narrowing down the possibilities:

Grab an unglazed porcelain tile and do a streak test. Gold will produce a golden streak when rubbed on the tile. If you have a jeweler nearby, take the tile and have him perform an acid test on the streaks made. If you're reasonably certain it's a noble metal, it'll be to your advantage to have a fire assay (cuppelation) test done. Generally speaking, with the high price of gold these days, assayers can be rather busy. The hardest part (for me) is waiting for the results. Good luck!

Looks like brass. The first picture has what appears to be wear. Kind of doubtful some one would make a piece what would be worn down during use out of gold. Another option if you have one of those "we buy gold" places around your area in a local store.

You could cut a piece off with a knife and hammer it flat forever if it were gold.
