any ideas what this could be? no marks or writing, has a very small flat spot that isnt perfectly flat. Thats a quarter sitting next to it.

Ball bearing? If this was found near the piece of iron you found it does sound like some kind of metal work may have been going on in the area.

What about a plumbing fitting?  Ball values start with balls that are drilled with a whole in the center.  And they make those in bronze and brass.   I found a few ball manufacturing companies that might be able to answer your question.
