Congratulations to your friend for finding what appears to be a genuine Confederate officer's button.

Too bad the button can't tell us how it got to be in Colorado. That's some tale, I'm sure.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Thanks for the link I just passed it on to him to look at. I am sure that he will not have it appraised since it is not something he will sell.

It would be interesting to see how it got to Colorado and then into an Indian camp.

There are a couple of possibilities that leap to mind immediately:   1) the owner could have been a "galvanized" Yankee (former Confederate prisoners of war who enlisted in the Union Army to escape persecution for desertion from the Union Army and the beginning of the Civil War.)   These troops were usually sent West and a couple of companies of them served on the western frontier doing normal frontier army duty.
    2) More likely it belonged to a former Confederate who not finding anything left at home worth persuing (especially given the fact that the post Civil War occupation was often extremely oppressive), decided to try his luck in the gold fields of Colorado.   There were several camps that consisted primarily of folks from the southern states.
As for how it wound up in an Indian camp, trade and spoils of war are equally likely scenarios.   Also, There were Indians serving on both sides in the Civil War.   Among the Confederates, the most famous were the Cherokees, Creeks and Seminoles of what is now Oklahoma that were commanded by General Stand Waite.   While those are not Colorado tribes, I'm sure they traded with the Indians in Colorado regularly before, during and after the Civil War.
