is this a button and if so any ideas of what it may have been on? It is approximately the size of a quarter somewhat larger

That is called a hem weight.  It was either used to keep a coat or a curtain hanging correctly, I forget which.

Good find, much rarer than a button, that's for sure.  Great

Thanks for the info after looking at your post I went to ebay and found some that were civil war era and definitely not that old the bar in the middle is definitely machined perfectly round where those were flat

I'm not sure what it is made of but it is pretty heavy so maybe lead
