Go Up Go Down

I had found this the day after the key in my own backyard.  It is obviously a black powder round that appears to have been fired but rather odd to find it in my bakyard.  The picture quality may not be sufficient for identification in which case I guess I'll have to try again if it isn't.  The nose is mashed down sonewhat and slightly bent over from impact I'm guessing but the base has 3 rings and when I tried to get a caliper measurement on it it measured approximately 0.834" long and approximately 0.413" wide.  This is a rather heavy round and looks like if a person were to be hit in the shoulder with it that it would have taken thier arm off.  Picture was taken with the round next to a clad U.S. dime for sizing reference.  If anyone has an idea to the caliber or possible age please let me know.  Thanks in advance

Hard to venture a guess. I have a .54 cal. muzzleloader & I'm sure the diameter
is larger than a dime. In your photo with the grooves in it , it looks like a maxi-ball, to be used without a patch. Just a wild guess, I would say a .36 or a .45 cal.

Thanks for the info.  I've been showing it around and getting some opinions on it but nothing seems concrete yet.  I'll update if I find out much of anything about it though.

String:

Upon careful examination by my father, (who is a local expert on firearms) he thinks that this slug was fired from a 45-70 rifle.  The 45 being what caliber the gun is and the 70 being the amount of grains of blackpowder used.  Also, when he measured the diameter of your slug, he measured it at roughly.460.  A 45-70 new slug should measure at .457-.458.  He said yours was obviously deformed a bit from being fired, and had lost some of it's true diameter.  Also, if I remember correctly (and if I'm wrong, someone please tell me) he said that the bullet itself should weigh between 300-350 grains.  Another thing...he said the age of this slug was probably around 30-50 years old.  Hopefully, this will help you out a little bit!  By the way, nice find and thanks for the post!!!

I forgot to mention, I took a picture of both yours and a new 45-70 slug.  You can see that the size is pretty much the same!

Thanks for the very enlightening information from both you and your father.  I appreciate very much that you were able to find out this information for me.

Another mystery solved... Grin

I thought it looked a bit "modern"   many people don't relize that the early cartridge guns used "black powder"..most did until the late 1890s...when they changed to "smokeless powder"..but some guns, including shotguns were still made until the 1940s that only take "black powder"...using smokeless powder in them may cause them to burst.
