Go Up Go Down

I got this item and I can't for the life of me tell what it is.

The round piece has some writing on the bottom.  I can make out MP CO. NY - which I am assuming means Military Police Company New York.  There is a star at the beginning and end of these letters.  There's also some other letters that I can't make out.  Part of that may be  A R C I N C, but I can't tell for sure and there should be a few more letters prior to that part.

The piece is about 3 1/2 " long.  There are 3 8-pointed stars around the rod part of it.  I am not sure if it was bent from the beginning or if it's damaged that way.

Sorry the photos aren't that good.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Luke

It's the wick raiser knob of an oil lamp.
we found them very often in the Victorian gold fields.on the rim they often have the manufacturers name and a date.

I did some research and I thought I found that the New York Military Police were involved in the civil war.  If I remember correctly, they were the 107th, but can't remember for sure.

That's exactly what it is. Good catch, Nickel_n.

Had nothing to know about size.    I go with the Oil Lamp part.   I'm using two as we speak to keep the chill out of the air.

I have to agree with you all.  I didn't recognize it at first, but as soon as nickel_n said it, I immediately recognized it.  I've seen plenty of them and used many of those lamps.  Guess my mind wasn't in the right groove at first!  LOL   Way to go Nickel_n!   Great
