it was popular in tourist spot areas to make a el cheapo keepsake ---you would put in a quarter or two --and a penny and you would crank the handle --which would flatten and streach out the penny --it kept the quarter / quarters as "payment"

they had them all over the place at popular tourist areas.

We did and I still do put cents on the rail tracks.

You come back in a few days and there it is.  Mashed like potatoes elongated.

It would make a cool etching base.

trust me.....it started life as a regular penny.....and if you're really lucky, you can still find the machines to make a modern elongated penny (although most of the newer machines don't do the scallopped edges).   As a matter of fact, here are someplaces where you can have one made:

The outside diameter of the piece has an irregular patter. Not saying that it would not be possible to make a die in that fashion but maybe some hand working. (Just a thought)

If it had a number on the back, I would say it might be from the Pioneer Motel.  The old skeleton key might have been fastened to the hole.

It looks consistent with having been a large cent, indeed.   Shocked   Though, I've never seen or heard of a large cent press... only seen small cent presses at rest spots and tourists places.

Take any coin, and put it through a seed mill. simple as that depending how much you want to distort the shape you put more or less pressure on it. Knew a guy who made conches for leather work that way and to put the lines on he would take a flat blade screw driver, and hammer it like a stamp.
