Hi Guys,

I have found two of these funny pins and am wondering if anyone knows what they are? They were found at a Boer war site from the 1890's in South Africa. I do believe they came from the British side of the Boer war. The shafts seem to have a Christmas tree serration effect on them where they would be hit into something to grip.

Any help on these items will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the replies guys....

This item is only about 1 1/2" long and about 1/4" in diameter. It also looks like it has a flat on top where a hammer hit it.... I was thinking maybe used to hold wire to a tree or something.... But it came from the Boer war..... so it has some sort of military use.

Look around for horse wagon stuff.

Could have been used to guide rope or rains on a wagon?

Just stabbing the dark here.

Hi vcrow1976,

Thanks for the guess.... this item is only about 1 1/2" long and about a 1/4" at the thickest point. A real mystery....

Paul, it's just a piton, not a mystery. Used on trees or wood poles for holding a rope. Not the right size for climbing rocks but great for climbing trees or telegraph poles in days gone by. Pitons for rock climbing have a closed ring on the end. The kind you found are pounded in as the climber goes up a tree or pole and removed on the way down. Loggers and lineman use them.
