Go Up Go Down

Greetings folks.  While out last weekend here in the Glen Allen, VA area, I found this thing down about 4 inches or so.  It's just at 2 1/4 inches long and about an inch in diameter and tapers to a rounded top.  It appears to be, and sounds like it's made of copper, and as you can see in the pictures, it has really neat, intricate designs all over it.  It's hollow but comparable in weight to about 75 "real" copper pennies.  I have never seen anything like this and cannot even begin to determine what it is.  I still need to get some "crud" off the backside, but it is cleaning up nicely.  Any ideas out there???  Thanks and Stay Safe !!!

Pappydoodle, I'm pretty sure you have a model copy of an antique mortar barrel.

Hey BA,

So this may be a toy huh?  All I know I've never seen anything like it, but you may be right.  Thanks my friend !!!  BTW, I wish I could go back to the Ardennes for about a month - that was always interesting !!!

That's a definite possibility, but looking at early cannon and mortars (through the early 1800's) I still think it would be right at home with some one's lead soldier collection or a desk model for a collector.

You may be right, BA, but I can't figure out where the touch fuse would have gone in the mortar. I can, however, see where a snuffer would swivel and the single block at the top would stop it from swinging too far to be useful.

Whatever it is, a desk top trophy of such an ornate object is a perfect use for it. If the finder is someone who receives lots of visitors, one may actually say something like, "Wow! Look at that lovely . . ."

Yeah, no obvious touch fuse is the biggest problem I've had with my theory, too.   Although, with a non-functioning model or toy, that wouldn't be a problem (or it could be blocked by grime).   The candle-snifter theory makes a lot of sense to me, also, although a roll and a half of indian head pennies seems a bit heavy to me---not that I've ever handled anything but cheap snifters.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't one or the other of the 2 suggestions we've made so far.

I looked up Napoleonic era mortars and they have the right look to them. Thicker walls, even in the models and a clearly defined touch hole are present.

The jury is definitely deliberating on this one. Onward!
