all,

need help can't figure out what this is, maria and I were in the woods by her old neighborhood, dug this up at about 1 ft down, range in as a nickel, was also right underneath a tree root, very hard to get at...one pic is kinda blurry sorry guys...gregg

also is there a way to get all the corrosion off, very heavy, about 3 inches long, no roler here sorry guys..gregg

Hello Gregg,

might be part of a farming machine? For easy rust removal buy some distilled water and dump it in tehre for some weeks. This will remove all the rust and nasty sal whoch causes pitting as well. Change the water after approx. 2 weeks.

If you want to go the fast and easy way then dump it into (salt)acid. You will have to neutralize it afterwards with some alcalic and the acid is a more agressive way of rust removal so it may damage  the iron.

If you have some time and are not afraid of dirt then you can also use a steel brush to clear off the rust.

Let us know what it looks like after the rust has come off.

well electrolosis is a bit complicated for my brain....using distilled water like christian mentioned....will update curious about this, also is there a way to date shotgun rounds,etc..i have the back half of the casing..gregg
