This was found on the beach. It feels heavy for it's size. seems to be a soft metal......Looks old....The top part is folded over and twisted backwards FYI. looks like 4? characters on back side. I would think it as just a buckle or something if not for its irregular shape and relief on front surface. Probably a stumper....

I would agree, except the 'loop' is a bend that was actually straight or gently curved at one time. Steve, could you give us a side view of the part that is standing upright in most of your photos?

Seldom, I think what you are seeing as letters is 2000 but upside down.  Of course, if we're seeing that, there could be other identifying marks also.

Might be part of a zinc battery plate. Why dont you straighten it out.

Most likely it is made of pot metal and trying to straighten it will break it.

Is it attracted to a magnet?

OK, Thanks for all the replies. It's not attracted by a magnet. Yes, soft like lead or pot metal. I flattened it out so you could see that it is not a pull tab or a zipper....it's asymmetrical.  I knew straightening it would break it..it did. Def. not a zipper or pull tab. See pic(s)... Thanks again.
