Hi Lee !

Mega-dittos on the above, especially when I'm hoping for a gold ring or a nickel !

Haven't posted any more-recent pics of finds, as my scanner went to cyberheaven a while back and I can't justify the cost to replace it right now.  I do have a camera with macro, but have never read the instructions on loading film into my computer. Hope to do that soon though.

Thanks for lookin at my junk !  Grin

HH.........Todd

Hi,
Looks like an "Eyelet" from a tarpaulin or similar.
There would be a part that goes on the opposite side with holes in.
The two parts fit together through the tarpaulin on opposite sides and the legs are bent over to keep it in place.
So you could put a rope through.

The size of this object is as big as a half dollar coin and seems too be made of copper also it was fairly deep at 12 inches down.

Hi Sasquache !

You say "seems " to be copper. Does it react to a magnet ?  If it does, it's probably not copper.

Also, is it copper color ?

[idea]I have found similar objects with those spikes sticking out of them, I have always thought that they were grommets of some sort for leather or cloth, perhaps part of a horse saddle or halter, I have also thought they could be the base of a candle lantern, the spikes stick into the bottom of a candle for support.

If it's copper, it should have a pretty distinct black or green patina on it.  You can also pretty easily tell hand hammered from machine cut copper if you look at it closely. Also, copper alloy that isn't smelted industrially is usually not uniform and will have pits and stress breaks.  I hope this helps somewhat.
BTW, if you ever run across a few pieces of crude green metal and the site has signs of native american habitation - don't throw it out.   The Mississipian, Hopewell, Adena, and some Woodland cultures smelted copper and this stuff is worth big $$ although it looks like a pile of junk after 1500 years in the ground.

I remember seeing this post back when it was first made and didn't really notice it. Kind of fuzzy, and all. In looking at it now, it appears to be a bezel frame for a piece of jewelry, perhaps a brooch or a photograph holder.

I tend to agree with GD.   I'd go so far as to say it may have been silver plated at some point.
