I'll go with wrex's explanation. Screen doors of the 1950s had a kick panel made with this sheet in aluminum or steel.

 Hello,
 Thanks for the replies everyone,
To answer some questions, I found this thingamabobber about twenty miles south of San Francisco, Could it be related to the old Ocean
Shore Railroad that ran right by where I found it ? I don't know  Undecided, here is another photo of the other side.

I have seen similar patterns in "spark guards" for cabin stoves, preventig burning coal and wood falling out when refilling fuel.
Maby a piece of an old steam engine?
