Go Up Go Down

OK folks, this is most likely from the late 1800's - early 1900's.
It appears to be brass and is extremely heavy for its size.
Speaking of size, it is roughly 6 cm in length (including the threaded portion) and approximately 3.3 cm in diameter at the widest point (the thin collar at the concave end).   The indention on the concave end only goes down about as far as the bottom of the "collar".   If you insert a toothpick through the opening at the threaded end, the object is hollow for approximately 4.75 cm.   This is the ONLY opening in the object which argues against it being a pressure relief valve.   [for my fellow Americans 6cm is about 2 3/8 inches; 3.3cm is about 1 5/16 inches; and 4.75 cm is about 1 7/8 inches]
It has been suggested that it might be an accumulator, but if so of what and to what?  Clearly it does seem to be designed to handle a relatively large amount of pressure.

Thanks,

BA

It looks like an incense cup to me. Take a scraping of the black stuff inside the cup end and see if it has any smell when you grind it up. If that's what it is, there may be a top to it nearby. I've seen similar things at cemetery gravestones. The old days equivalent of the flowers along side the road or at a headstone. I just recently saw one that had a red glass cylinder inside a tall brass, windproof candle holder. Yep. Candle was lit.

my only other wild one was, the old gas street lamp lighters, with that tool on the end of a rod. but the weight mentioned blew that one.

BA, Is that a tie rod end or radius rod end from a very old vehicle? If it is the concave end will be at least 1/2 a sphere. The ball and cap are missing. Is there a hole for a cotter pin in the threaded end.

On second thought it doesn't have the overall shape of an auto part. Its shape is almost ornamental.  Idea

Two cents worth...

It's definitely ornamental but that does not mean that it did not have some purpose such as a door or cabinet  handle.  A desk drawer?  It could b e the end of a long pole that held up some curtains?  Certainly would be a quality piece from back when things were not made cheaply very often.

I'll bet that it won't be an easy one to figure out.  On first glance it looked like a reducer(pipe sizes) but the bowl has no threads, etc.

Good luck bro.  How 'bout that whole SEC domination thing these days?  Those SEC fans sure are full of themselves aye?

Years ago I had a set of brass candle sticks that the top piece unscrewed for easy cleaning. Best I can come up with BA.

Thanks, guys.  I'm going to have to try GD's incense burner test.   Beyond that, I figure the ornamental solutions make the most sense.   I'm not sure why they'd make it so dang heavy, but if it's used with a heat source, I guess that's a good reason.   Have to put this in the "still looking, but ... " file.

BA

The threaded end does look like the old gas fittings.

Maybe it had a Jet down the center for a Globe, Mantle.

Sorta like the New Colman things. Spay Gas in the Mantle for a Light?
