You are correct. It could only be an oiler if It that is  a cap on it. Im not sure thats a cap. Dont think anyone else is either as its not been screwed off.

I agree with seldom ,It looks like its off a jewish Menorah
The oil cap suggestion I dont see, They would  have a cap ,This has no hinge where one be ,nor do I see threads on top
Also if this were an oil cap would the wick not go through to the inside of the cup ? If so I see no hole ,just the bottom thread has a hole inside the thread no hole in the cup , If B.A can clarify a hole inside the cup then maybe it is

I would tend to agree - except I'm pretty sure the hole has to go all the way through to be used as an oiler. (shrug).

Please, discontinue your shrugging. We can't see it.

There is no hole because the oil goes up, not down. It is wicked after being filled.

The part needing oil is above the cup with a rope wrapped around it inside of the bearing housing. The end of the rope dips down into the oil reservoir which is filled with an oil can when needed. The oil soaks into the rope and is wicked up into the bearing housing keeping the inside bearing moistened with oil. It's a primitive technology used with both wooden and metal bearings. The term for the mechanical device holding bearings in place is known as a pillow block and that block has a cut in it for the oil wick.

Remember, this is not modern technology so try thinking of primitive ways to get oil to be available, not in a sealed space and you have an oil cup like this one.

Unfortunately, I no longer have the piece, so I can't try to get the flanged end off.  Based on some pictures I've seen of various oil caps, I feel comfortable with that answer.  I'd be more comfortable if I could unscrew or otherwise remove the "flanged" portion.   But since it wasn't my property, I didn't want to apply more than minimal force that could have possibly proved the theory.    I can confirm, though that the hole in the thread end does go into the body of the vessel.   I can further confirm that once past the neck of the threaded section the probe was able to "curve" with the general shape of the vessel......so it wasn't just a straight shot.

Golddigger ,I know what an oil cup is I have run heavy equipment and worked in machine shop since i was 12 and scraped more old equipment than most people have seen.

I think you are confusing siphoning with a wick from an oil cup with capillary oiling from a Reservoir.

Excuse me if my "shrug" upset someone. I made the assumption that the word "shrug" would have indicated a - uh - shrug - which is a lifting up of both shoulders in an "I don't know" action.

I, believe it or not - have dealt with old equipment  - for 55 years - my dad did construction and I ran a huge truck and a dozer and tractor by the time I was 6. (farm kids had to). My old lathe also has an oil cup - yes - its really old.

I look forward to seeing exactly how this is positioned and used.

Mrs. O

Oh, how do you post a pic?

Your pictures show a gravity feed oiler, not an oil cup with a wick feed.

Look folks, if you don't get it, that's fine. I've completely lost interest in trying to explain this to people under the age of 60 who have never been around equipment that is over 200 years old.
